About Professor John Kelly

Dr John Kelly private professor bladder cancer treatment

Professor John Kelly is internationally renowned for his pioneering work in bladder cancer. He has been instrumental in developing robotic cystectomy (removal of the bladder) and has published techniques for bladder reconstruction ("neobladder") following cystectomy. He has conducted clinical trials in hyperthermia, a new treatment for early stage bladder cancer and his group at University College London (UCL) have developed novel tests for the detection of bladder cancer.

John has been performing robotic surgery for 10 years and is the clinical lead for the largest urology pelvic cancer centre in the UK at University College London Hospitals (UCLH). The department is one the largest robotic centres of its kind in Europe and patients benefit from the precision of robotic surgery through a reduced recovery time, reduced pain following the procedure and from far less visible scarring. John is the director of the Chitra Sethia Minimal Access Centre at UCLH which trains the next generation of robotic surgeons from the UK and abroad.

John is heavily involved in cancer research. He leads the Kelly:Feber Lab - one of the UK’s leading research groups discovering new ways to detect, diagnose and treat urological cancer. The lab is based at UCL and has received funding from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and the Medical Research Council (MRC). Their work aims to improve cancer detection and diagnosis which will allow doctors to better select the right treatments and improve outcomes for patients.

John has practised at some of the most prestigious healthcare organisations in the world. He moved to UCLH in 2009 from Cambridge University, having been a consultant urologist working in complex cancer surgery at Addenbrookes Hospital. Previously, he was a fellow at the Cornell University Hospital in New York. John has been the Chairman of the UK National Cancer Research Institute, Bladder Clinical Studies Group and is currently the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of The Urology Foundation
